Once upon a time, there was a little girl and a little boy who had amazing Superpowers. But these kids didn’t know they had Superpowers. The little boy and the little girl also had many big feelings, dreams, wishes, and amazing stories in their heart that they did not really realize.
But they did know that they LOVED colourful cupcakes and balloons.
One day, their parents took them to visit EmPOWERland for a child counselling adventure. They wondered: what would they see, what would they do. They also wondered if it would it be scary or if it would be fun. Because they were not sure what to expect, to prepare, their parents had read them the Superhero Story of their playful Feelings Helper, and showed them pictures on the website.
The day finally arrived. A play therapist was waiting for them at the door to welcome them, and guess what?

These two kids were used to hearing NO. In their heart, it felt like everything was a NO. That was not fun at all. Boo.

We often get this question from parents.
Does focusing on kids’ strengths mean that we don’t address problems?
Absolutely not. Focusing on their strengths does not mean that we do not address the problems that are troubling a child. But we view and approach them from a different lens, in a wider context.
Our child therapists do keep in mind what the problems are, and we explore what might be behind them. We also recognize the importance of understanding the child’s presenting concerns, diagnoses, and other challenges (such as anxiety, depression, grief and loss, low self-esteem, bullying, aggressive behaviour, traumatic experiences, ADHD, ASD, parent-child disconnection, trouble at school, and difficulty making and maintaining healthy friendships). The problems and challenges that kids, teens, and families have can be tough to handle. That’s why we offer specialized help.
We do not ignore the problems or weaknesses. However, we build a child’s resilience by playing to their (Superpower!) strengths. It is from a secure base of solid self-identity and EmPOWERment that a child can best tackle any areas of weakness, exploring, using and developing their strengths to grow and thrive in super fun ways.
