Once upon a time there was a girl (she was about seven) called Mishaal, who loved making everyone feel welcome.

One day, Mishaal and her panda friend, Shiwu, decided to build a clubhouse in the forest. They made a big sign that said, “Everyone Belongs Here.” Soon, all kinds of forest friends arrived.

Some were excited and talkative. Some were shy. Some wanted to play, while others preferred to sit quietly and watch for a while.
Shiwu looked confused:“How can we make everyone feel welcome when they are all so different?”
Mishaal smiled and said, “Maybe being welcome does not have to look the same for everyone.”

Guess what she did?

So she gave each friend the space to connect in their own way. Some talked, some played, some drew pictures, and some simply needed a little more time. That day, Mishaal discovered one of her Superpowers: helping people feel comfortable being themselves. That is one of the reasons Mishaal chose to become a psychologist.

Today, as a counselling practicum student, she enjoys walking alongside children, teens, adults, and families with curiosity, warmth, and hope, helping them discover the strengths they already carry within themselves, one step at a time. And if you ever visit Kids Reconnect, don’t be surprised if you find Shiwu the panda nearby, reminding everyone that sometimes the bravest thing we can do is slow down, notice, and keep growing.

Mishaal knows that you do not have to come to therapy knowing exactly what to say. You can talk, ask questions, laugh, be quiet, or take your time. Because Mishaal believes there are many ways to connect, and there is always room for you to be YOU!

Mishaal Jannat’s Professional Bio

Mishaal Jannat is a Practicum Student at Kids Reconnect, providing counselling under the supervision of Natalie Bergman, Registered Psychologist.

Mishaal is completing her Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology at City University of Seattle. She holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Psychology from Mount Royal University and brings previous experience in psychology research, mentoring, tutoring, education, intake, administration, and community leadership.

Although Mishaal is new to the therapist chair, she is definitely not new to Kids Reconnect!
Mishaal first joined our team in 2022 as an Intake Team member and later became our Intake Team Lead. For years, she has been one of the warm voices on the other end of the phone when a parent takes that important first step and reaches out for support. She has listened to parents’ questions, worries, hopes, and stories. She has helped families figure out where to begin, introduced them to the Kids Reconnect way of supporting children, and helped match kids with therapists who may be a good fit for them. Now, Mishaal is taking an exciting new step of her own, from welcoming families into Kids Reconnect to welcoming kids into the therapy room!

Mishaal knows that meeting a new therapist can feel different for every child. Some kids walk in and have LOTS to say. Some want to play first. Some want to create something. Some need to look around and figure everything out. And some might be thinking, “I’m not talking yet!”

Mishaal brings a warm, patient, curious, and playful approach to counselling.

She understands that kids have many ways of communicating, through words, play, art, stories, imagination, movement, humour, questions, and sometimes simply being quiet together. Mishaal supports kids in making sense of Big Feelings, navigating everyday challenges, strengthening relationships, and finding new ways to express what is happening inside.

Many languages. Many cultures. Many ways to be a family.

Mishaal brings a multicultural and multilingual perspective to her counselling work. She speaks English, Urdu, Hindi, and Kashmiri and values learning about the cultures, traditions, relationships, and experiences that are important to each child and family. She wants children to know that they do not have to leave important parts of themselves at the therapy-room door. There is room for their family, their culture, their language, their questions, their silliness, their quietness and everything that helps make them them.

And one last thing before you meet her…
Mishaal’s name is pronounced just like “Michelle!”

.

“Families are a primary support system for many people. One of the reasons I am so proud of our work at Kids Reconnect is that we help families to connect, heal, and become stronger. This has a huge impact on children’s sense of identity and it helps them connect with the world in healthy ways as they grow.”
