Whitney’s Professional Bio
Whitney McGeary-Khunte is a Registered Provisional Psychologist with the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP) and a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association, Her specialty is working with children, parents, and families, and she is completing her final hours for her full certification as a Play Therapist with the Canadian Association of Play Therapy.
Whitney is an experienced, specialized child therapist star on our team
Her 20 years of experience include supporting children, youth, parents, and families facing challenges to explore and use their strengths to grow and thrive. Whitney has a warm place in her heart for neurodiverse kids and children with disabilities, so she has specialized her professional qualifications accordingly. She is masterful at supporting kids and families with challenges related to physical and learning disabilities, developmental difficulties, relational struggles, trauma, anxiety, grief, self-esteem, depression, ADHD, and adverse childhood experiences. Whitney also has ample experience providing group therapy and facilitating social skills groups for children and youth.
In her clinical role as a child therapist, Whitney loves using play therapy. With adolescents and children, she also enjoys using games, sandtray therapy, and art therapy techniques, as well as client-centred, holistic, trauma-informed, and strength-based approaches.
Whitney’s professional qualifications and affiliations
Whitney’s expertise is a valuable complement to the Kids Reconnect team. She holds a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University, a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Mount Royal University, and from MacEwan University, a Diploma in Disability Studies with Distinction, and a Special Needs Certificate with Distinction. Her certifications and supplemental training include Foundational Play Therapy Training from the Canadian Association of Play Therapy, Mandt Systems Training, Trauma Informed Training for Families Experiencing Intimate Partner Violence, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), Trauma Informed Care Training, Nurturing Parenting Program: Orientation Seminar Facilitator Training, and Core Brain Story Certification from the Alberta Family Wellness Initiative (AFWI).
She is a professional member of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), the Canadian Association of Play Therapy (CAPT), the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA), the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta (PAA), and the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP). She feels both proud and honoured to have lent her voice as a member of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee of the Canadian Association of Play Therapy.
